Welcome to my channel. I’ve always loved sharp objects and knives especially.
Over the years I’ve acquired the skills to sharpen knives and enjoy sharing. I’ll be doing knife reviews and comparison videos. Tool reviews. Initial impression videos and more. This isn’t your typical knife channel. I mainly talk about my opinion and and personal experience with the items I’m reviewing and sometimes I’ll throw in the specs.
I have many friends in my personal life. But none of my friends share the passion for knives and tools like I do, so turning to UA-cam was my only choice lol.

Finger choils? Is it function or just another fad?

I bet you can shave with that sharpness.
I’d like it way less sharp, else I’d loose all of my fingers thank you :’)
Well defined review. For fear of getting pummeled online, I do like a well executed choil on small to medium knives. Choils should cease there. In my thinking they are on these sizes to aid you performing close tasks. Sort of like choking up on a baseball bat for better control. You sacrifice power, for control. However, when you get to the end of the bat, or in this case the knife handle, you're utilizing the tool with it's full power potential. When a hitter slides his hands all the way down a bat's handle, he's swinging with power.
Cold Steel needs to make a thinner and lighter version of the Trail Master more geared towards a fighting bowie. It must have that Kraton handle too. Love how grippy they are.
Next week's question: blue or red? 😂
Sharpening choils are cool cause they increase the knife’s “life span”, so to speak (preventing the edge from “receding” into the blade after a few sharpenings). Finger choils are stupid, just put a sharpening choil and the blade closer to the handle; something like a becker or a Tope Recon. Same effect, but better grip and finger protection.
Wondering if they have any in 14c28n. Id definitely buy one. I have watchmen we222 its a rat 3 type little bigger but smaller then the 4 . Better steel and great price. That's a great size knife in my opinion for my outdoor stuff.
Now i know you dont like buck but i think the 119 does a finger choil good in my opinion because it blends in
A knife blade edge could be longer, or the handle could be longer, to eliminate the finger choil. It seems like having a longer handle would be the proper way to go about it. This way, you still have a handle and a balance point. However, a finger choil may help a bad handle. Some knives have an empty space between the handle and the edge of the blade with no finger cut out, but it could be used as a finger choil. Having a place for your finger in front of the handle doesn't seem to have any benefits. The Cold Steel Subhilt Fighter fixed blade has that cool handle. Instead of a finger choil, it has part of the handle to go between the two fingers. Extra grip is good. It may not be a fad. It may be a poor design choice. A better-designed knife likely doesn't need a finger choil. My Cold Steel SR1 folder is my favorite knife for EDC. It would be better if the handguard reached the edge of the blade. It doesn't bother me too much. It's still my favorite EDC knife.

"give me a knife please" *proceeds to give earth slasher
Finger choil is why I DON'T own an XM-24
Fixed blades do not need a finger choil. In my opinion.
Depends on the knife, but generally doesn’t matter .
Alrite Already im going for the "Sofa King Stupid Question "...... Have you ever Cut yourself by Accident while performing a Test like this one. I know the saying. A Sharp Tool is a Safe Tool.
I mostly agree with you. But I pretty much hate finger choils on all fixed blade knives. Especially the ESEE 3/4. Waste of space. I do prefer finger choils on folders for the extra confidence it gives me in case the lock fails
How would this work for magnacut. Haven't tried sharpening it yet.
I just picked one up, haven't opened the box yet. No lube necessary?.
Did you get the idea from the final Rambo movie????
One that can cut galvanized square steel.
That’s brutal. Have you tried Boker’s N690?

@@peterbiltknifeguy how did you find its edge holding compared to n695?
@@gravytrainoutdoors it seems decent. But I haven’t tested it thoroughly yet
@@peterbiltknifeguy that’s good to know. Thats been my experience so far as well. I haven’t had enough time with it yet though either. Seems to be on par with VG-10 or AUS10. I have a scout junior in it.
As long as i get more metal to sharpen over time it doesn't matter to me.
I’m good with them on fixed blades, pocket knives usually don’t have the blade length to sacrifice for a choil. A perfect example to me is the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 (and the Mili 2 honestly). Very little sharpened edge for way more than necessary handle length. IMO
Right on
I think good design and balance negates the need for a choil, especially handle design. You’re right about the big knives there’s absolutely no need for a choil. I think people like choils because it’s fashionable. Personally I don’t like those oversized finger guards either they’re ugly and most look like an afterthought, another fashion that’s unnecessary.
Well said
Thank you for your scientific research!
Any time! Lol
The main reasons the choils are nice is for fine control and ease of sharpening.
Nearly all my survival knives have choil. Makes for a more versatile blade with wider usage
I just want Ontario's new owners to start producing the RAT-5 again (and not trying to sell it at 130$) 😢. In general, no finger choil for certain grips/leverages + ergos (meaning you can choke up on the blade while still having an actual handle vs a choke up with your finger fairly close to the edge/harsh angles). That being said, for an edc or a smaller knife (where youre not doing chopping/batoning/hard use tasks) FCs are great.
Excellent answer
Only prefer a finger choil if the blade is over 9-10in to balance out the blade.
French trader design.. the finger rests against the back of the blade.. best of both worlds..
Huh?
Finger choil is best choil
Spent more than a weeks pay for my first Trail master! Carbon V steel. Copper cross guard. Broke the cross guard soon after I got it. Must have been the early-mid 80's. Still have that beautiful knife without a cross guard. Cold Steel catalog had a Benchmade butterfly knife knife that I spent another weeks pay on. Recessed rivets. Came with a sheath that has since disappeared. The Knife still lives in my pack that I carry to this day. The pack is not from the same time period as the knife but you get the idea. Cold Steel rocks! Also, nice job on the edge of that blade!
Awesome. Thank you
I prefer a good and free knife like a GSO 12....No choil...😂😂😂😂....Good stuff.....
lol. Better get that preorder now
@@peterbiltknifeguy He said he would make one for me as I am SPECIAL.....😂😂😂😂
Glenn Danzig would approve.
Still don’t know what a finger Choi L is
They both can work well if they’re design is good, but that being said I prefer no finger choil, but I appreciate a sharpening choil.
good point. I prefer all my knives without the finger choil, especially the small knives. I modify my knives and their handles that come with choils wen possible. Just did my Hogue EX-F01 handle modification and it came out a much better knife.
Awesome. And thank you
I agree, no need for my hand to be another inch further from the edge because of a choil I want to use my knife whist holding the handle comfortably. Choil takes away leverage when using the handle.
On a big knife like 10" I like a finger choil. Sub 8" no finger choil
But why Josh. Were knife people. We always have a smaller one for fine tasks
@@peterbiltknifeguy all knives are good knives!
FC on more of a utility usage blade. No FC on everything else.
I tend to lean on no choil but some knives does it ok
I prefer a ricasso. Most finger choils are a bit small for my big finger.
Not a fan to finger a choil on bigger knives...Like Scab stated I do like em on the knives with a 4" blade or less to whittle away....Da Gargoyle as way too funny....😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.....Good stuff
lol. Damn gargoyles
You bring up some valid points. Some are definitely useless while some are useful. Rumor has it there’s a weekend warrior feather sticking with a Mountain Man as you read this! Haha!👊🤣🤘
🤣 those damn weekend warriors
sorry dude you got scammed that is so dull that the best knife sharpener couldnt sharpen it
Finger choil
I'd prefer more edge. And anyway I always carry a smaller blade too, so I never have a need for a finger choil. I do prefer a sharpening choil though.
Yes. I agree. I should have specified that. I’m definitely down with sharpening choils
Though more texture would be nice on the choilless knife
Those big knives have they're purpose and if you're using one for that purpose and you put you're finger there you're going to end up in the hospital. These knives are made to be use like a machete. Chopping, slashing buttoning... you do not! Want your finger there to get smashed or worse!
Honestly I think finger choil on fine edged blades ffgs and the like and maybe no choil on more aggressive/durable grinds/edges I think actually that both of the knives here are exactly perfect in their combination of features and am now curious as to the steels
One is 1095 and the other is 3v
